French authorities to begin intercepting small boats in English Channel following British demands
French officials have consented to begin stopping small boats in the Channel, following months of pressure from the UK.
This policy shift follows the British leader sent a letter to the President urging him to back the plan and stating there presently "lack any effective deterrent" in the Channel.
French maritime police will be allowed to stop the small boats at sea, but exclusively prior to they've picked up their migrants, according to authoritative confirmation.
French authorities have infrequently acted to stop the heavily loaded boats departing from the shoreline because it is viewed as excessively high a risk to both personnel and civilians.
"It is crucial that we implement these methods this period... We have no effective prevention in the Channel."
Now, a French maritime police representative says personnel will start intervening at sea, with the aim of protecting human life.
Notably, the spokesperson ruled out the use of nets to stop boats, which had previously been suggested as a possible method to disable the engines of the vessels.
This determination to take action at all is a major advancement, following a brief shift towards a more aggressive approach this warmer season, which ceased when the previous government official departed from government.
This was demonstrated in July, in the run-up to a meeting between the UK leader and French president, when authorities were observed walking into the sea to damage the hulls of a vessel.
Currently French authorities will once more be permitted to stop boats prior to they collect migrant passengers from the beaches of France's north coast, although it's uncertain how the small boats will be prevented.
Strong winds are presently delaying the start of intervention operations and the people-smuggling gangs will be looking for ways to adapt to avoid detection, as they have frequently done in the previous instances.
